Concrete Roof Tiles vs. Metal Roofing: Which is Better for a Texas Home?

When it comes to building a custom home, materials matter and the roof is no exception! While many consider metal roofing to be the superior choice for a Texas home, there’s another roofing material that is just as great, if not better than metal. Concrete roof tiles have become one of the most popular roofing options for homes in Texas—and for good reason! We’re outlining five reasons to choose concrete tiles for your custom home below.

Durable and Low-Maintenance

One of the most important factors when making the decision between concrete tiles and metal roofing is durability. After all, no one wants to deal with an unexpected roof leak or costly repairs. What’s great about concrete tiles is that they get stronger over time.  Metal roofing can be durable as well but it can be prone to corrosion, warping, and even denting. In contrast, concrete tiles improve in strength due to the reaction between the water and cement. Concrete tile also lasts up to 3.75 times longer than traditional asphalt shingles.

While concrete tiles are very durable, there may come a time when a repair is needed. Replacing a damaged concrete tile is easy, as each individual tile can be swapped out without having to replace the entire roof. With the exception of a few minor repairs as needed, a concrete tile roof has a lifespan of approximately 50 years.

Temperature Regulation

Concrete roof tiles are great at regulating temperatures in the home. A comparison of traditional asphalt shingles and concrete tiles showed a significant difference in attic temperatures, with a temperature of 94 degrees (concrete tiles) vs. 139 degrees (asphalt shingles). Metal roofing also regulates temperatures well, but are not nearly as effective as concrete roof tiles. The ability to regulate temperatures makes concrete tiles a great choice for Texas homeowners, as they can significantly reduce heating and cooling costs.

Cost-Effective

Compared to metal roofing, concrete tiles tend to be slightly more expensive. Depending on where you live and the brand or company you purchase from, they range from approximately $300-$500 per square foot. However, their ability to reduce heating and cooling costs, long lifespan, and low-maintenance qualities have a great return on investment for homeowners.

Versatile Design Options

Concrete tiles come in a range of textures and colors. In addition, concrete tiles complement many different types of siding as well as architectural styles. Choose from traditional, transitional, and contemporary concrete tile designs in a range of profiles. No matter what look you prefer, the final effect not only gives your roof a multidimensional look but also boosts your home’s curb appeal.

Manufacturer Warranties

While warranties on concrete tiles vary from manufacturer to manufacturer, many come with exceptional warranties. For example, Boral Roofing offers a limited lifetime warranty that can be transferred from one homeowner to the next. When shopping for concrete roof tiles, make sure to ask about the warranty and what issues are covered.
